Pemahaman bacaan adalah tugas yang menantang bagi siswa ESL/EFL. Strategi metakognitif telah dianggap sebagai teknik yang efektif yang dapat membantu siswa mengatasi kesulitan dalam membaca. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan tingkat kesadaran siswa EFL terhadap strategi metakognitif dalam membaca dan untuk mencari tahu apakah instruksi strategi metakognitif memiliki efek signifikan pada pemahaman membaca siswa EFL di sebuah pesantren Islam. Metode penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain kuasi-eksperimental digunakan. Populasi penelitian adalah siswa SMA kelas 2 di Madrasah 'Ulumul Qur'an (MUQ) Banda Aceh. Dengan menggunakan teknik simple random sampling, dua kelas dipilih sebagai sampel penelitian ini (XI IPA III sebagai EG dan XI IPA II sebagai CG). Instrumen yang digunakan adalah Inventori Kesadaran Metakognitif dalam Strategi Membaca (MARSI) oleh Mokhtari dan Reichard (2002) serta tes pemahaman membaca yang diadopsi dari TOEFL Junior, tes standar dari ETS. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa EFL secara dominan menggunakan Strategi Pemecahan Masalah (PROB), diikuti oleh Strategi Membaca Dukungan (SUP) dan Strategi Membaca Global (GLOB). Instruksi strategi metakognitif dalam membaca juga memberikan efek signifikan pada siswa EFL di pesantren Islam terkait dengan pemahaman membaca mereka. Oleh karena itu, Ho ditolak dan Ha diterima.
Reading comprehension is a challenging task for ESL/EFL students. Metacognitive strategies have been considered as an effective technique which can assist students in overcoming reading difficulties. The study aimed to determine the EFL students’ level awareness of metacognitive reading strategies and to find out whether the metacognitive strategies instruction have a significant effect on EFL students’ reading comprehension at an Islamic boarding school. A quantitative research method with the quasi-experimental design was employed. The population of the study was the 2nd grade senior high school students at Madrasah ‘Ulumul Qur’an (MUQ) Banda Aceh. By using a simple random sampling technique, two classes were chosen as the sample of this study (XI IPA III as EG and XI IPA II as CG). The instruments used were the Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies (MARSI) Inventory by Mokhtari and Reichard (2002) and reading comprehension test adopted from TOEFL Junior, a standardized test from ETS. The result showed that EFL students predominantly utilized the Problem-Solving Strategy (PROB), followed up by Support Reading Strategy (SUP) and Global Reading Strategy (GLOB). The instruction of metacognitive reading strategy also had given a significant effect to the EFL students at Islamic boarding school on their reading comprehension. Therefore, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted.
