Penelitian kualitatif deskriptif ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis campur kode yang digunakan oleh guru bahasa Inggris di sekolah menengah atas selama ELT dan untuk menentukan alasan mengapa guru menggunakan campur kode di kelas selama mengajar. Data penelitian ini diperoleh dari masing-masing guru bahasa Inggris di tiga sekolah, yaitu SMAN 2, SMAN 7, dan SMAN 11 Banda Aceh. Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan observasi dan wawancara. Data yang diambil dari seluruh interaksi antara guru bahasa Inggris dan siswa ditranskrip dan dianalisis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru menggunakan tiga jenis campur kode, dengan jenis penyisipan yang dominan di SMAN 2 dan SMAN 7 Banda Aceh (97 kejadian di SMAN 2, 68 kejadian di SMAN 7), diikuti dengan pergantian (43 kejadian di SMAN 2, 23 kemunculan di SMAN 7), dan leksikalisasi kongruen (8 kemunculan di SMAN 2, 6 kemunculan di SMAN 7). Sedangkan di SMAN 11 Banda Aceh jenis yang dominan adalah pergantian (47 kejadian), disusul penyisipan (25 kejadian), dan leksikalisasi kongruen (5 kejadian). Hasil lain yang ditemukan adalah campur kode paling sering disebabkan oleh peran dan hubungan partisipan serta faktor situasional.
This descriptive qualitative research is aimed to discover types of code mixing used by English teachers in senior high schools during ELT and to specify the reasons of why teachers using code-mixing in class during teaching. The data of this study were obtained from each of the English teacher from three schools, that are SMAN 2, SMAN 7, and SMAN 11 Banda Aceh. The data of this research were collected by using observation and interview. The data taken from the whole interaction between English teacher and students were transcribed and analyzed. The results showed that teachers used three types of code-mixing, with dominant type of insertion in SMAN 2 and SMAN 7 Banda Aceh (97 occurrences in SMAN 2, 68 occurrences in SMAN 7), followed by alternation (43 occurrences in SMAN 2, 23 occurrences in SMAN 7), and congruent lexicalization (8 occurrences in SMAN 2, 6 occurrences in SMAN 7). Meanwhile in SMAN 11 Banda Aceh the dominant type is alternation (47 occurrence), followed by insertion (25 occurrence), and congruent lexicalization (5 occurrence). Another result found code-mixing was most often because of participant roles and relationship as well as of situational factors.
