The purpose of this study was to look at some given theories and/or research findings to prove whether the use of skimming and scanning are appropriate in improving students’ reading comprehension. The researcher used the library research method to collect data from books, journals, articles, research result and thesis that have been conducted by several experts related to the problem being investigated. The results of this study show that skimming and scanning techniques are beneficial and effectiveand they are successfully applied by teachers to increase students’ ability in English, especially in enhancing the ability in finding the information from a text quickly. Moreover, the previous researches also showed that these techniques give a good impact for the students when they keep practicing these techniques in order to increase the reading speed for a long text. Therefore, the teachers should consider using skimming and scanning techniques as one of effective techniques in teaching reading.
