Key Words: Three-step Interview Technique, Teaching Speaking.

The objectives of the study are to examine: (1) whether there is a significant difference in speaking achievement between the students who are taught using Three-Step Interview technique and those who are taught through teacher-centered approach. (2) the students’ response toward the use of Three-Step Interview technique. The method in this study is experimental study. It was conducted to the second year students at MAS Tgk. Chiek Oemar Diyan in the academic year 2016/2017. The sample of the research was two classes; XIIPA2 was as the experimental class and XIIPA1 was as the control class. The sampling technique used was random sampling. The techniques of collecting data were speaking test and questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using t-test for speaking test and the percentage for questionnaire. The result of data analysis shows that: (1) Three-Step Interview technique is more effective than teacher-centered approach to teach speaking, which was proven by the result of t-test, in which tcount (3.41) is higher than ttable (2.00); (2) the students had a quite positive response (81%) toward the use of Three-Step Interview technique to their speaking classroom. Therefore, it could be concluded that Three-step Interview technique effectively improved the students’ achievement in speaking skill as well as distributed many advantages for the students.
