This research aims to find out whether Herringbone Technique improved students’
reading comprehension especially in finding main idea and supporting detail.
Herringbone is one of the techniqueswhich can help students find important
information and main idea in a text by seeking answer six comprehension questions
(who, what, where, when, why, how) on diagram. The sample of this research was
class VIII3 which consisted of 30 students. The researc her used simple random
sampling to choose the sample. This research used one group pre -test and post-test
design; it is one of research designs in experimental research. Pretest was given
before treatment, while posttest was given after students taught by using Herringbone
Technique. The instruments used in this research were tests; they were pretest and
post-test. Both pretest and post test consisted of ten questions. The technique of data
analysis, the researcher used statistical formula. The mean score o f pretest was 59
and the post-test was 76. Futhermore, the result of calculation of t -test was 10.15,
while the critical value of 0.05 significant level was 2.045 and degree of freedom is
29. T –test (10.15) was higher than t-score table (2.045). It can be concluded that
using Herringbone Technique in teaching reading can increase students’ reading
comprehension.
