This thesis is written under the title of The Use of Two Stay Two Stray Strategy in Teaching Reading Comprehension (An Experimental Study at SMPN Beutong Ateuh, Nagan Raya) .This study is intended to figure out: (1) whether the second year students of SMPN BeutongAteuh who are taught reading by using TSTS based on cooperative learning get higher scores than those who are taught by using Grammar Translation Method, and (2) the students’ responses toward the teaching of reading by using TSTS based on cooperative learning at the second grade of SMPN BeutongAteuh. The method used in this study was experimental research design. The experiment was conducted at SMPN Beutong Ateuh, and all second year students of SMPN BeutongAteuh were chosen as the population. The sample consisted of two classes with the total number of students being 60. It was chosen by using purposive sampling. Test and questionnaire were used as the instruments to collect the data. The collected data were analyzed by using the t-score and the percentage formula. The result shows that the implementation of TSTS in the teaching of reading to the second year students of SMP Beutong Ateuh was more successful than that by using Grammar Translation Method. The result shows that the t-score (2.79) was higher than the t-table (2.021). It indicates that the students in the experimental class who were taught by using TSTS got higher scores than those in the control class who were taught by using Grammar Translation Method. Therefore, the use of TSTS in teaching reading is an effective way to improve the students’ ability. It is proper to mention because there is a significant difference between the experimental class and the control class. Based on the questionnaire’s results, the students gave positive responses related to the strategy, positive relationship, motivation and material given after learning by using TSTS. It can increase their self-confidence, social interaction, individual accountability, group skill and they also got better improvements because they could understand the material by learning together as a team.
