Protozoa darah merupakan parasit yang dapat menginfeksi berbagai jenis burung dan menyebabkan gangguan kesehatan pada inangnya. Burung kuntul kerbau (Bubulcus ibis) merupakan salah satu burung air yang berpotensi terinfeksi protozoa darah melalui serangga vektor. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis protozoa darah yang menginfeksi burung kuntul kerbau di Hutan Mangrove Kecamatan Baitussalam, Kabupaten Aceh Besar. Sebanyak 20 sampel darah diperiksa menggunakan metode Microhaematocrit Centrifugation Technique (MHCT) dan ulas darah tipis dengan pewarnaan Diff-Quick. Identifikasi dilakukan berdasarkan karakteristik morfologi yang diamati menggunakan mikroskop cahaya dengan perbesaran 100× untuk MHCT dan 1000x ulas darah tipis. Hasil pemeriksaan dengan metode MHCT tidak terlihat mikrofilaria cacing dan Trypanosoma. Hasil pemeriksaan ulas darah tipis menunjukkan bahwa 9 dari 20 sampel (45%) positif terinfeksi Haemoproteus sp. Namun tidak ditemukannya protozoa lain seperti Leucocytozoon dan Plasmodium. Morfologi Haemoproteus sp. ditandai oleh gametosit yang berkembang di dalam eritrosit, berbentuk memanjang mengikuti inti eritrosit, serta mengandung granula pigmen hemozoin. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa protozoa darah yang menginfeksi burung kuntul kerbau (Bubulcus ibis) di Hutan Mangrove Kecamatan Baitussalam, Kabupaten Aceh Besar adalah Haemoproteus sp.

Blood protozoa are parasites capable of infecting various bird species and causing health disorders in their hosts. The cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) is one of the waterbird species that is potentially susceptible to blood protozoan infections transmitted by insect vectors. This study aimed to identify the species of blood protozoa infecting cattle egrets in the mangrove forest of Baitussalam District, Aceh Besar Regency. A total of 20 blood samples were examined using the Microhaematocrit Centrifugation Technique (MHCT) and thin blood smear stained with Diff-Quick. Identification was performed based on morphological characteristics observed under a light microscope at 100× magnification for MHCT and 1000× magnification for thin blood smears. The MHCT examination revealed no evidence of microfilariae or Trypanosoma. Examination of thin blood smears showed that 9 of 20 samples (45%) were positive for Haemoproteus sp. infection, whereas no other blood protozoa, such as Leucocytozoon or Plasmodium, were detected. The morphology of Haemoproteus sp. was characterized by elongated gametocytes developing within erythrocytes, closely apposed to the erythrocyte nucleus, and containing hemozoin pigment granules. In conclusion, the blood protozoan infecting cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) in the mangrove forest of Baitussalam District, Aceh Besar Regency, was identified as Haemoproteus sp.
