The heat equation is one of the partial differential equations widely used to model heat transfer processes in various fields of science and engineering. Analytical solutions to the heat equation are generally available only for specific cases; therefore, numerical methods are required to obtain approximate solutions. This study aims to implement the Approximate Factorization 2 (AF2) method for solving the two-dimensional heat equation and to analyze its accuracy, convergence, and stability. The AF2 method is implemented by discretizing the equation using the Crank–Nicolson scheme for time discretization and the central difference scheme for spatial discretization. Subsequently, the two-dimensional operator is factorized into two one-dimensional tridiagonal linear systems, which are solved using the Thomas algorithm. Numerical simulations are performed on a square domain with prescribed initial and boundary conditions, allowing the numerical solution to be compared with the exact solution. The simulation results show that the AF2 method produces a numerical solution that closely approximates the exact solution, with a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0,000043137 and a Relative Root Mean Square Error (RRMSE) of 0,079771%. Stability analysis based on the von Neumann stability analysis yields an amplification factor of 0,1837, which satisfies the stability criterion. Convergence analysis based on the relative error indicates that the numerical solution has a relative deviation of 0,000633518 from the exact solution, and the results are further interpreted with reference to the Lax Equivalence Theorem. The results demonstrate that the AF2 method simplifies the solution of the discretized system into two one-dimensional linear systems while satisfying the accuracy, stability, and convergence aspects for the two-dimensional heat equation considered.
