Road traffic accidents remain one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with most cases attributed to human error, including drivers' failure to recognize traffic signs in a timely manner. Since most traffic signs are relatively small, they remain challenging for object detection models to identify accurately. Furthermore, although YOLOv12 has demonstrated promising detection performance, its high computational complexity limits its deployment on edge devices with constrained computing resources. This study proposes an optimized YOLOv12n model by integrating Shallow Layer Enhancement (SLE) and Rigorous Gradation Pruning (RGP) to improve the detection of small traffic signs while enhancing computational efficiency. SLE is implemented by introducing an additional P2 detection layer to preserve spatial information from shallow feature maps, whereas RGP reduces model complexity through progressive filter pruning based on the contribution of each filter. The proposed approach was evaluated using the TT100K dataset enhanced with copy-paste augmentation, and model performance was assessed using object detection evaluation metrics. The experimental results show that SLE improves the detection performance of small traffic signs compared with the baseline YOLOv12n model, achieving an mAP50 of 80.82%. Furthermore, applying RGP to YOLOv12 significantly reduces model complexity while improving detection accuracy, resulting in an mAP50 of 82.48%, a reduction in the number of parameters from 2.57 million to 2.32 million, and an inference speed of 59.19 FPS. The integration of SLE and RGP produces a model that maintains high detection performance while achieving better computational efficiency than the baseline model, with an mAP50 of 84.27%, 1.95 million parameters, a model size of 4.27 MB, and an inference speed of 66.58 FPS. These improvements make the proposed model more suitable for deployment on edge devices. Overall, the results demonstrate that the combination of SLE and RGP is an effective approach for optimizing YOLOv12 for traffic sign detection on edge devices.
