Comprehension.
Reading comprehension al senio high schools in Pidie is considered very important, because it is stated in School-Based Curriculum 2006, reading is one of other four skills that must be mastered by the students. By mastering this skill students are expected to be able to get any kinds of information stated in text and they are also prepare to be familiar with English text when they study at the university. In the School-Based Curriculum, the students in senior high school must be able to comprehend kinds of genre, find topic sentences, and main idea.
All those skills are elements which are examined in National Test, so that English
teachers must conduct these reading classes at senior high school in Pidie
Regency.
The objective of this research is to reveal whether the English teachers in Pidie Regency have difficulties in teaching reading comprehension to the students. Qualitative research design consist of questionnaire, observation, and interviews are used to collect the data from respondents. The data collected from respondents were then analyzed by using a simple percentage formula.
Respondents in this research were 22 English teachers from 9 senior high schools in Pidie Regency. To measure teachers professionalism, questionnaires given to them. The results of this research showed that the English teachers in Pidie Regency have difficulties in teaching reading comprehension to students because of class size (large class), the data can be seen from percentage of questionnaire answered by them, total of them are 16 out of 22 respondents (72,72%). Therefore, the teachers have to use approaches and strategies properly according to the students' chas er and attitudes. Another data also shows that the reading text is loo difficult lo the students, data can be seen from the percentage of questionnaires answered by respondents, total of them are 17 out of 22 respondents (77.27%), so that teachers in Pidie Regency took an initiative to looked for reading material out of textbooks such as from newspapers, Internet and other sources that related to students' level and ability. [Next, based on questionnaire it was found that, the teachers faced the problems in teaching reading caused by low of students' interest and ability, total of them are 20 out of
22 respondents (90,40 %), therefore the teacher have to support and motivate the
students frequently. Another data also can be seen that the teachers prepared the lesson plan when they were teaching English generally, and teaching reading especially, total of them are 19 out of 22 respondents (86,36%),the lesson plan they prepared cover one, two, or three activities to be conducted in several
meeting and their lesson plan contain of several component. This study suggested to Diknas and headmaster to add classes anymore, in order teaching learning process run well, and provide reading materials lo students other than the text books which are appropriate to the students' level and ability.
