ABSTRACT

Gata Khumaira. (2024). Semiotic Discourse Analysis in Teacher Marketplace
Online News [Graduate Thesis. Universitas Syiah Kuala]. Under the supervision of
Prof. Dr. Yunisrina Q. Yusuf, S.Pd., M.Ling, and Dr. Dian Fajrina, S.Pd., M.Ed.

This research aims to analyze semiotic discourse analysis regarding to the
Linguistics Signs and Graphic Signs of news discourse, which is a vital field of
linguistic research. News has always been seen as an objective and formal linguistic
form of discourse. However, the definition of news is rather elusive (Rule &
Anderson, 2003). News must be something extraordinary and particular enough to
attract the public's attention. This research discussed semiotic analysis in online
news which is Beritasatu.com about a new policy for teachers in Indonesia (Teacher
Marketplace) suggested by the Education prime minister (Nadiem Makariem). This
policy is an online database of teachers that can be chosen from schools that need
teachers immediately. Therefore, this policy was being considered as an insult to
the teachers. Social media such as online news pages, TikTok, Instagram, etc
conducted online demonstration practices indicating that the government insults
teachers’ profession by selling them in online databases. This research focused on
the headlines, lexical choices, language used, typography, and photography of the
15 news related to the Teacher Marketplace on Beritasatu.com. By using the
framework by Miles et al.(2014) the results showed 15 biased headlines, 27 biased
lexical choices, 18 unpleasant language used, 10 satirizing photographies, and the
standard typography of the online web news explained. These results play a role in
the news readers to be more aware of biased and harsh words that are delivered on
certain online news pages.
