Penelitian ini berfokus pada analisis kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh siswa kelas VII dalam mempelajari kosakata bahasa Inggris di SMP Negeri 14 Banda Aceh. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan metode campuran, data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner dan wawancara. Sebanyak 30 siswa berpartisipasi dalam kuesioner, sementara 5 siswa terlibat dalam wawancara mendalam. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sebanyak 65,91% siswa mengalami kesulitan karena perbedaan antara pengucapan dan penulisan kata, dan 61,36% siswa merasa takut melakukan kesalahan. Selain itu, 59,09% siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam membedakan kata-kata yang mirip, dan 56,82% siswa mengaku kurang memiliki motivasi untuk mempelajari kosakata baru. Faktor-faktor lain yang berkontribusi adalah metode pengajaran yang monoton dan tidak menarik, serta penjelasan guru yang kurang jelas. Penelitian ini mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor utama yang mempengaruhi kesulitan siswa dalam mempelajari kosakata, termasuk beban kognitif karena perbedaan antara pengucapan dan penulisan kata-kata bahasa Inggris, dan kurangnya kesempatan untuk latihan bahasa di luar kelas. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat membantu dalam merancang strategi pembelajaran yang lebih efektif untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dan penguasaan kosakata siswa.
This study focuses on analyzing the difficulties faced by grade VII students in learning English vocabulary at SMP Negeri 14 Banda Aceh. Using a mixed-method approach, data was collected through questionnaires and interviews. A total of 30 students participated in the questionnaire, while 5 students were involved in in-depth interviews. The results showed that as many as 65.91% of students experienced difficulties due to the difference between pronunciation and writing of words, and 61.36% of students felt afraid of making mistakes. In addition, 59.09% of students had difficulty distinguishing similar words, and 56.82% of students claimed to lack motivation to learn new vocabulary. Other contributing factors are monotonous and uninteresting teaching methods, and unclear teacher explanations. This study identifies the main factors affecting students' difficulties in learning vocabulary, including cognitive load due to the difference between pronunciation and writing of English words, and the lack of opportunities for language practice outside the classroom. The results of this study are expected to help in designing more effective learning strategies to improve students' understanding and mastery of vocabulary.
