Motivasi mempunyai peranan penting dalam mengembangkan kompetensi berbicara siswa. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tingkat motivasi siswa dalam kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris, dan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara motivasi siswa dan kompetensi berbicara bahasa Inggris di MTsS Darul Muta’alimin. Data dikumpulkan melalui angket dan tes berbicara dan dianalisis menggunakan koefisien korelasi Pearson Product Moment. Sampelnya adalah siswa kelas VII SMP Darul Muta’alimin yang berjumlah 30 orang. Penelitian ini menggunakan purposive sampling. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 12 (40%) siswa memiliki motivasi sedang, 13 (43,3%) siswa memiliki motivasi tinggi, 5 (16,7%) siswa memiliki motivasi tertinggi, dan tidak ada satupun siswa yang termasuk dalam kategori rendah dan sangat rendah. Hasil perhitungan motivasi siswa adalah 78,36 yang berarti siswa kelas satu MTsS Darul Muta’alimin mempunyai motivasi yang tinggi dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Hasil korelasi kedua variabel atau rxy sebesar 0,699. Sehingga rxy > rtable ; 0,699 > 0,361 yang berarti hipotesis nol (Ho) ditolak dan Hipotesis Alternatif (Ha) diterima. Artinya terdapat korelasi yang kuat antara motivasi siswa dan kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris.

Motivation has an important role in developing students' speaking competence. The aims of this study are to find out the level of students’ motivation in English speaking competence, and to figure out the correlation between students’ motivation and English speaking competence at MTsS Darul Muta’alimin. The data were collected from questionnaire and speaking test and they were analyzed using pearson’s product moment coefficient of correlation. The sample was 30 students of first grade junior high school of Darul Muta’alimin. This study used the purposive sampling. The findings showed that 12 (40%) students have moderate motivation, 13 (43,3%) students have high motivation, 5 (16,7 %) students have highest motivation, and no one students related to low and lowest category. The calculation result of students’ motivation is 78,36 which means the first grade students at MTsS Darul Muta’alimin have high motivation in learning English. The result of correlation between two variable or rxy is 0,699. So that rxy > rtable ; 0.699 > 0.361 which mean that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that there is a strong correlation between students' motivation and English speaking competence. Key words: Motivation, Speaking Competence, English Speaking.
