Penanda wacana adalah kata atau frase yang menandakan struktur dan organisasi bahasa lisan atau tulisan. Penggunaan penanda yang tepat dapat sangat memengaruhi keefektifan presentasi, khususnya dalam situasi berisiko tinggi seperti sidang tesis. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki penggunaan penanda wacana dalam bahasa lisan, menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif untuk mengidentifikasi penanda mikro, penanda makro, dan operator yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa selama presentasi pertahanan tesis mereka. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan merekam suara pada saat presentasi sidang tesis enam mahasiswa Program Pascasarjana Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Syiah Kuala. Data ditranskrip untuk mengidentifikasi berbagai jenis, fungsi, dan frekuensi penanda wacana berdasarkan klasifikasi yang dikembangkan oleh Fortuno (2006). Analisis data menunjukkan bahwa penanda mikro sejauh ini merupakan penanda yang paling sering digunakan oleh siswa dengan penanda tambahan di urutan teratas diikuti oleh penanda makro dan operator. Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa penanda mikro memiliki beberapa fungsi seperti tambahan: and, now, or, temporal: then, after, before, causal: because, since, because of, kontrastif: but, however, dan berturut-turut: so, then, so that. Selain itu, macro markers juga memiliki beberapa fungsi seperti, starter: first of all, rephraser: that’s it, organizer: let’s, let me, I want to, topic shifter: so, now, actually, and conclusion: finally. Selain itu, fungsi operator meliputi sikap: I think, as we know, elisitasi: why is that, dan jeda dalam bicara: so, okay. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan penanda wacana yang strategis dapat menjadi faktor penting dalam keberhasilan presentasi, terutama dalam pengaturan formal seperti sidang tesis.

Discourse markers are words or phrases that signal the structure and organization of spoken or written language. The use of appropriate markers can greatly affect the effectiveness of a presentation, particularly in a high-stakes situation such as a thesis defense. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of discourse markers in spoken language, using a qualitative research method to identify micro markers, macro markers, and operators used by students during their thesis defense presentations. The data was gathered by recording the voice during the thesis defense presentations of six students enrolled at Graduate Program of English Education at Syiah Kuala University. The data was transcribed for identifying the various types, functions, and frequency of discourse markers based on the classification developed by Fortuno (2006). Data analysis showed that micro markers were by far the most frequent markers utilized by the students with additional markers came on top followed by macro markers and operators. The results also revealed that micro markers have some functions such as additional: and, now, or, temporal: then, after, before, causal: because, since, because of, contrastive: but, however, and consecutive: so, then, so that. Furthermore, the macro markers also have some functions such as, starter: first of all, rephraser: that’s it, organizer: let’s, let me, I want to, topic shifter: so, now, actually, and conclusion: finally. Moreover, the functions of operator include attitudinal: I think, as we know, elicitation: why is that, and pause filler: so, okay. These findings suggest that the strategic use of discourse markers can be an important factor in the success of a presentation, particularly in a formal setting like a thesis defense.
