Penelitian kualitatif deskriptif ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis alih kode yang digunakan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris dan untuk mengetahui pengaruh yang dirasakan siswa terhadap praktik alih kode guru di kelas EFL. Data dalam penelitian ini diperoleh dari satu guru bahasa Inggris dan empat siswa sebagai perwakilan dari dua kelas di SMA Negeri 10 Fajar Harapan Banda Aceh. Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan lembar observasi, angket, dan wawancara. Dua pertemuan diamati untuk masing-masing dari dua kelas. Seluruh interaksi direkam, dan kemudian jenis alih kode ditranskripsikan dan dianalisis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru menggunakan tiga jenis alih kode, yaitu alih antarkalimat, alih intrakalimat, dan alih tag. Hasil lain menemukan bahwa alih kode paling sering digunakan selama kegiatan inti. Selanjutnya, siswa melaporkan bahwa ada tiga efek dari praktik alih kode guru: membuat mereka lebih nyaman belajar bahasa Inggris di kelas, membantu mereka lebih memahami materi pelajaran, dan membuat proses belajar Bahasa Inggris lebih menyenangkan.

This descriptive qualitative research is aimed to discover types of code switching used by an English teacher and to determine the effects felt by students toward the practice of teacher’s code-switching in EFL classrooms. The data in this study were obtained from one English teacher and four students as representatives from two classes at SMA Negeri 10 Fajar Harapan Banda Aceh. The data of this research were collected by using observation sheet, questionnaires, and interview. Two meetings were observed for each of the two classes. The whole interaction was recorded, and then types of code-switching were transcribed and analyzed. The results showed that the teacher used three types of code-switching, including inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching, and tag-switching. Another result found that code-switching was most often used during main activities. Furthermore, students reported that there were three effects of teacher’s code-switching practice: it made them more at ease learning English in the classroom, helped them better comprehend of the subject material, and made the process of learning English more pleasurable.
