Ketidakmampuan siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal-soal fisika terjadi karena di diduga salah satu dipengaruhi oleh pola pikir siswa yang belum sistematis. Penelitian ini bermaksud untuk menganalisis kemampuan kognitif siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal materi teori kinetik gas. Permasalahan yang di bahas dalam penelitian ini terkait kemampuan kognitif siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal fisika. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada siswa kelas XI SMAN 5 Banda Aceh. Sampel dalam penelitian ini diperoleh dengan teknik purposive sampling yaitu kelas XI IPA 1 dan XI IPA 2. Instrument dalam penelitian ini berupa tes kognitif soal HOTS. Data penelitian dianalisis sesuai dengan analisis deskriptif presentase. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian diperoleh bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam menyelesaiakan soal dapat dikelompokkan menjadi beberapa aspek yaitu kemampuan mendeksripsikan soal (63,6 %) dengan kategori memuaskan, Penggunaan rumus (50,7%) dengan kategori memuaskan, penyusunan langkah penyelesaian (29,6%) dengan kategori tidak memuaskan dan kebenaran jawaban (25,6%) berkategori tidak memuaskan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang didapatkan bahwa kemampuan kognitif siswa SMAN 5 Banda Aceh berada pada 42.74 % dari skor maksimal dengan kategori cukup memuaskan.

This study intends to analyze students' cognitive abilities in solving the kinetic theory of gases. The problems discussed in this study are related to students' cognitive abilities in solving physics problems. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. This research was conducted on students of class XI SMAN 5 Banda Aceh. The sample in this study was obtained by purposive sampling technique, namely class XI IPA 1 and XI IPA 2. The instrument in this study was a cognitive test of HOTS questions. The research data were analyzed according to the percentage descriptive analysis. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the ability of students to solve problems can be grouped into several aspects, namely the ability to describe questions (63.6%) in the satisfactory category, the use of formulas (50.7%) in the satisfactory category, and the preparation of completion steps (29.6%). with the unsatisfactory category and the correctness of the answer (25.6%) in the unsatisfactory category. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the cognitive abilities of SMAN 5 Banda Aceh students were at 42.74% of the maximum score in the quite satisfactory category.
