The purpose of this study is to describe the characteristics of Indonesian monophthong vowels generated by female and male speakers in Banda Aceh who speak the language as their first language. The subjects in this research were ten males and ten females from Banda Aceh who were chosen through purposive sampling to generate eight target vowels. The data of the monophthongs quality were obtained through recorded words elicitation with the speakers. The researcher recorded the speakers to elicit the target words from the word list that contain the monophthong vowels. F1 and F2 were analyzed with PRAAT Software in order to determine vowel quality. The comparison of the two subjects supports theories that female and male speakers generate monophthongs sounds differently. The findings reveal that the vowel quality of female and male speakers differ significantly. Female speakers' vowel space is lower and more fronted, whereas male speakers' vowel space is higher and more back.
