(An Experimental Study at SNMPN 4 Banda Aceh)



Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) is one of teaching method which has seven components (constructivism, inquiry, questioning, modeling, learning community, reflection, and authentic assessment). The writer conducted the study to know whether CTL can enhance students' achievement in reading comprehension. To gain the data, the writer conducted an experimental study at SMP Negeri 4 Banda Aceh. This study used one group pre test-post test design by taking one class purposively consisted of 29 second grade students as the sample. To know the students’ achievement, this study used test, which involved pre test and post test. To find the result between pre test and post test achievement, the writer used t-test. The result of the test showed that the mean score of pre test is 36.38 and the mean score of post test is 71.90 and the result of t-score is 18.4. The t-Value at the level significant 0.05 is 1.701 for one-tailed test with the degree of freedom 28. Since, the result of t-test is higher than t-Value, the alternate hypothesis is accepted. It proves that the use of CTL is effective to help the students comprehend the text, engage their participation in learning reading and improve their vocabulary mastery. In other word, CTL can enhance students’ achievement in reading comprehension especially in narrative text.
