Title : Implementing Buzz Groups Technique in Teaching Reading Comprehension at Junior High School (An Experimental Study at The Second Year Students of SMPN 17 Banda Aceh)

Keywords: Buzz Groups Technique, Reading Comprehension, Improvement.

The objective of this study is to know significant improvement of students’ reading comprehension after implementing Buzz Groups technique. The population was all of the second year students of SMPN 17 Banda Aceh. The sample was the students of class VIII-2 (experimental class) and VIII-7 (control class). The researcher used true experimental design of pre-test and post-test control group design. The researcher administered pre-test, treatment and post-test to collect the data. The findings indicated that there was an improvement of students’ achievement in the experimental class. As the researcher used gain-score calculation, the mean score of pre-test for the experimental class was 50. 8 and the post-test was 87.2, while the mean score of pre-test in the control class was 41.6 and the post-test was 50. The researcher also used t-test to prove the hypotheses. The result showed that tscore > ttable or 15.48 > 1.68, which means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. It is shown that the students who are taught by using Buzz Groups technique improved their reading comprehension especially in finding detail information, vocabulary, and reference.
