Speaking is one of the skills that has become an important part of students’ daily
life. This study is descriptive qualitative research. This study was intended to
describe the teaching of speaking at SMA Negeri 1 Bireuen. It focused on
describing the teachers’ ways and techniques in teaching speaking and the
challenges in the teaching learning process. The subject of this study was the
teachers of the 10
th
grade classes of SMA Negeri 1 Bireuen. The instruments used
to collect the data were observation and interview. The findings of this study show
that the teachers used many ways and techniques in teaching speaking in the
classroom. This is found in the way they construct lesson plan, prepare the
materials as to teaching, showing good personal characteristics, providing
effective teacher-student interaction and making compelete assessments towards
students work. The teachers conducted activities that made the students active in
the teaching learning process. The teachers used the methods such as
Communicative Language Teaching and Cooperative Learning including giving a
talk, group work, assigning tasks, reviewing the lesson, taking control of a
conversation, pair work, and group work. Besides, the findings show that there are
some challenges that the teachers encountered in the teaching of speaking – i.e.
students’ lack of vocabulary, pronunciation problems, nothing to say, lack of
motivation and use of mother tongue. Thus, the teachers do their best to
overcome these challenges along the process of their teaching in the classroom.
