Title : Improving Reading Comprehension by Using Skimming and Scanning Techniques (An Experimental Study on Second Grade Students of SMAN 1 Meulaboh)

Keyword: Reading Comprehension, Skimming and Scanning Techniques

This research is intended to find out whether skimming and scanning techniques improve students’ reading comprehension. This research was conducted at SMAN 1 Meulaboh. The sample of the study consist of (32) students of class XI-MIA 3 (Science Class). The framework undertaken is promoted by Abdelrahman & Bsharah, 2014. The researcher used one group pre-test and post-test design. The techniques of data collection were the researcher administered pre-test, treatment, and post-test, while in the technique of data analysis, the researcher used statistical formula. The mean score of pre-test was 45 and the post-test was 65. The finding showed that the improvement of the mean was 20 points. Futhermore, the result of calculation of t-test was 4.7, while the critical value of 0.05 significant level was 2.4 and degree of freedom is 23. T-test (4.7) was higher than t-score table (2.4). In short, skimming and scanning techniques can improve the students’ reading comprehension particularly at the second grade students of SMAN 1 Meulaboh. Thus, this research suggests that skimming and scanning techniques is one of the alternatives to teach reading skill at school.
