Title : The Impact of Songs in Promoting Students’ Affective Domain in Listening (A Qualitative Research at SMPN 2 Darul Imarah)

Keywords : Impact, Promote, Affective Domain, and Listening

This study was conducted with the aims to discover impact of songs in promoting students’ affective domain in listening. The data was collected and analyzed in terms of qualitative approach. The data was obtained through observation and interview. Results of this study showed that songs impact positively in students’ affective domain. By using song, students seemed enthusiast to learn listening. Additionally, students listened and remembered well the title of the new introduced song (receiving phenomena), were active in class participation (responding phenomena), showed the ability to solve problems although they still were incompetent doing this individually (valuing), capable in managing their time well (organization), and cooperate in group activities, yet they were still not having self-reliance when worked individually (internalizing values). Students felt the class environment was more comfortable and enjoyable. Based on the findings, teacher should consider using song to teach not only for students’ knowledge aspect but also the culture embedded with the song in teaching listening. Aside from cognitive aspects, teacher also should focus in maintaining and recording students’ progress in affective domain. Finally, the other researchers should consider undertaking a research to investigate in what ways song help students to understand lesson material better and faster.
