Title : The Analysis of Interlingual Errors on Students’ Written Translation (A Qualitative Research at SMP Negeri 6 Banda Aceh)

This title was chosen since there were many senior high school students who still make errors in translating sentences in English. This study was intended to find out the types of students’ error when they translate Indonesian sentences into English sentences. Therefore, it only discusses about the errors they have done in translating English sentences. Descriptive qualitative was used in this study and the subjects were all of students of second year at SMP Negeri 6 Banda Aceh. Moreover The instruments used in this study was a test. The finding shows that there were 343 errors students made in translating 12 sentences. It includes grammatical interference with the frequecy of students’ error 77, verb-tense interference with the frequency of students’ error 109, prepositional interference with the frequency of students’ error 96, and lexical interference with the frequency of students’ error 65. Each student made all kind of errors, and most of them made the similar error. The causes of the errors emergence were interlanguage interference. In translating the sentences into the target language, the students sometimes were influenced by their native language. Most of them translated it literally. It is also called negative transfer. It occurs when the learner transfers items and structures that are not the same in both languages
