This study aims to investigate the use of Language Learning Strategies by English Foreign Language (EFL) students in speaking skill. The participants were 30 English students of Syiah Kuala University. The participants were divided into two groups, Group A (17 students) with higher grades achieved and Group B (13 students) with lower grades achieved. The instrument used to collect data was questionnaire from SILL version 7.0 by Oxford (1990). The results show that the participants used learning strategies with different rate and frequency. The 30 participants, both Group A and Group B, used learning strategies moderately with a high preference for metacognitive and cognitive strategies and the least preferred was memory strategies. The results of the studies on language learning indicated that language learning strategies have an important role in the process of language learning. The participants used and chose language learning strategies differently. The students used learning strategies with variant rate and frequency in learning speaking English, depend on their grades level. In conclusion, the metacognitive strategies are the most preferred strategies used by students in speaking class, and it can help students achieve better in speaking skill ability.
