Pendekatan Feature-based menggunakan proses ekstraksi fitur berdasarkan karakteristik visual wajah, sedangkan pendekatan CNN-based melakukan pembelajaran fitur secara otomatis melalui jaringan konvolusi.

Facial expression classification is one of the fields in computer vision that faces challenges in recognising visual patterns due to the complexity of facial characteristics and expression variations. This research conducts a comparative analysis between Feature-based and CNN-based approaches to identify the characteristics of each method in facial expression classification using the USK-FEMO dataset. The Feature-based approach employs feature extraction processes based on visual facial characteristics, while the CNN-based approach automatically learns features through convolutional networks. The dataset used consists of 1,200 images across five expression classes: Happy, Sad, Angry, Surprised, and Bored. Evaluation is carried out using accuracy, precision, F1-score, and confusion matrix to analyse the capabilities and classification patterns of both approaches. The analysis results show that the Feature-based approach has the characteristic of more structured feature representation and simpler computational processes, but it depends on the quality of the extracted features. Meanwhile, the CNN-based approach has more adaptive feature learning through automatic feature extraction, enabling it to build more complex visual representations. Based on the comparison, both approaches exhibit different characteristics in representing facial expression information, so the choice of method should not only be based on performance values but also consider system requirements, data complexity, and available computational resources.
