Eco-Enzyme merupakan cairan multifungsi yang dihasilkan dari limbah kulit buah atau sayuran. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan aktivitas enzim hidrolitik pada Eco-Enzyme yang dihasilkan dari kulit jeruk lemon (Citrus limon (L.) Burm. f) dan jeruk bali (Citrus grandis), serta mengevaluasi efikasinya dalam mengolah air limbah dari sistem drainase kampus Universitas Syiah Kuala. Eco-Enzyme diproduksi melalui fermentasi campuran molase : kulit jeruk : dan air dengan rasio 1:3:10 selama 100 hari. Karakterisasi Eco-Enzyme meliputi pengamatan organoleptik, pengukuran pH, dan pengujian aktivitas amilase, protease, lipase dan selulase menggunakan spektrofotometri UV-Vis. Eco-Enzyme yang dihasilkan diaplikasikan pada sampel air limbah dengan waktu kontak 5 dan 10 hari, diikuti dengan analisis parameter kualitas air: pH, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), dan kandungan logam berat (Fe, Pb, Cu, Cd). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Eco-Enzyme kulit jeruk lemon memiliki aktivitas enzim hidrolase (amilase, protease, lipase, dan selulase) yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan Eco-Enzyme kulit jeruk bali. Aplikasi Eco-Enzyme menurunkan nilai BOD, COD, dan TDS serta meningkatkan kadar DO; namun, Eco-Enzyme tersebut tidak efektif dalam menurunkan TSS atau menaikkan pH hingga memenuhi standar mutu. Analisis logam berat menunjukkan bahwa kadar Pb, Cu, dan Cd tetap berada dibawah standar mutu, sedangkan kadar Fe meningkat setelah perlakuan. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa Eco-Enzyme kulit jeruk lemon menunjukkan potensi yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan Eco-Enzyme kulit jeruk bali dalam mendegradasi senyawa organik pada air limbah melalui aktivitas enzim hidrolase, sehingga dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai alternatif pada pra-pengolahan yang ramah lingkungan untuk pengelolaan limbah cair.
Eco-Enzyme is a multifunctional liquid produced through the fermentation of organic waste, such as fruit and vegetable peels. This study aimed to determine the activities of hydrolytic enzymes in Eco-Enzyme produced from lemon (Citrus limon (L.) Burm. f.) and pomelo (Citrus grandis) peels, and to evaluate its effectiveness in treating wastewater from the drainage system of Syiah Kuala University. Eco-Enzyme was prepared by fermenting a mixture of molasses, citrus peels, and water at a ratio of 1:3:10 for 100 days. The resulting Eco-Enzyme was characterized through organoleptic observations, pH measurement, and determination of amylase, protease, lipase, and cellulase activities using UV–Visible spectrophotometry. The Eco-Enzyme was subsequently applied to wastewater samples with contact times of 5 and 10 days. Water quality was evaluated based on pH, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and the concentrations of heavy metals (Fe, Pb, Cu, and Cd). The results showed that Eco-Enzyme derived from lemon peels exhibited higher hydrolytic enzyme activities, including amylase, protease, lipase, and cellulase, than that produced from pomelo peels. The application of Eco-Enzyme reduced BOD, COD, and TDS levels while increasing DO concentration. However, it was ineffective in reducing TSS or increasing pH to comply with the applicable water quality standards. Heavy metal analysis revealed that Pb, Cu, and Cd concentrations remained below the regulatory limits, whereas Fe concentration increased following treatment. These findings indicate that Eco-Enzyme produced from lemon peels has greater potential than Eco-Enzyme derived from pomelo peels for degrading organic pollutants in wastewater through hydrolytic enzyme activity. Therefore, it shows promise as an environmentally friendly alternative for the pre-treatment of wastewater prior to subsequent treatment processes.
