Penelitian ini menyelidiki pengaruh penggunaan caption Instagram sebagai pendekatan Self-Directed Learning (SDL) terhadap kemampuan menulis bahasa Inggris siswa. Menulis merupakan keterampilan bahasa yang penting untuk komunikasi akademik, namun banyak siswa EFL mengalami kesulitan akibat keterbatasan latihan dan rendahnya motivasi. Oleh karena itu, mengintegrasikan platform digital yang familiar seperti Instagram dapat memberikan lingkungan belajar yang lebih menarik. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan desain one-group pretest–posttest. Partisipan penelitian adalah 34 siswa kelas X SMAN Unggul Harapan Persada Southwest Aceh. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes menulis yang diberikan sebelum dan sesudah perlakuan. Siswa diminta untuk menulis caption bahasa Inggris berdasarkan topik yang diberikan. Data dianalisis menggunakan statistik deskriptif dan uji paired sample t-test untuk melihat perbedaan antara skor pre-test dan post-test siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan yang signifikan dalam kemampuan menulis siswa setelah penerapan kegiatan caption Instagram. Nilai rata-rata meningkat dari 70,26 pada pre-test menjadi 87,59 pada post-test. Uji paired sample t-test menunjukkan perbedaan yang signifikan secara statistik antara kedua tes (t = −10,751, p < 0,05), yang menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan memberikan pengaruh positif yang signifikan terhadap kemampuan menulis bahasa Inggris siswa. Peningkatan terlihat pada lima aspek penulisan, yaitu isi, organisasi, tata bahasa, kosakata, dan mekanik. Secara keseluruhan, penggunaan caption Instagram sebagai pendekatan Self-Directed Learning efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan menulis bahasa Inggris siswa.

This study investigated the impact of using Instagram captions as a Self-Directed Learning (SDL) approach on students’ English writing skills. Writing is an essential language skill for academic communication, yet many EFL students experience difficulties due to limited practice and low motivation. Therefore, integrating familiar digital platforms such as Instagram may provide a more engaging learning environment. This study employed a quantitative method using a one-group pretest–posttest design. The participants were 34 tenth-grade students of SMAN Unggul Harapan Persada Southwest Aceh. Data were collected through writing tests administered before and after the treatment. Students were required to write English captions based on given topics. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired sample t-test to examine the difference between students’ pre-test and post-test writing scores. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ writing performance after the implementation of Instagram caption activities. The mean score increased from 70.26 in the pre-test to 87.59 in the post-test. The paired sample t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between the two tests (t = −10.751, p < 0.05), indicating that the treatment had a significant positive effect on students’ English writing skills. Improvements were observed across five writing aspects: content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. Overall, the use of Instagram captions as a Self-Directed Learning approach effectively enhanced students’ English writing skills.
