Keterampilan Berpikir Tingkat Tinggi (HOTS) merupakan bagian penting dari proses pembelajaran karena membantu siswa meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam memecahkan masalah dan berpikir kritis. Keterampilan ini juga menjadi tuntutan dalam Kurikulum 13 (K13) dan Kurikulum Merdeka di Indonesia. Namun, guru sebagai pendidik profesional sering menghadapi kesulitan dalam menerapkan soal-soal berbasis HOTS di dalam kelas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh guru Bahasa Inggris dalam menerapkan soal-soal berbasis HOTS selama proses belajar mengajar. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMP Negeri 3 Meulaboh. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah empat orang guru Bahasa Inggris dari SMP Negeri 3 Meulaboh. Objek penelitian ini adalah kesulitan yang mereka alami dalam menerapkan HOTS. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, dan data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat tiga kesulitan utama yang dihadapi oleh para guru, yaitu: (1) keterbatasan pengetahuan dan pemahaman tentang HOTS, (2) rendahnya kemampuan siswa serta perbedaan latar belakang mereka, dan (3) kurangnya persiapan dalam merancang soal-soal berbasis HOTS. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa guru memerlukan lebih banyak pelatihan dan dukungan agar dapat menerapkan HOTS secara efektif di dalam kelas.

Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Asnawi, S.Pd., M.Ed. and Anisah, S.Pd., M.A. Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) are an important part of the teaching and learning process because they help students improve their ability to solve problems and think critically. These skills are also required by the Kurikulum 13 (K13) and Kurikulum Merdeka in Indonesia. However, teachers as professional educators often face difficulties in implementing HOTS-based questions in the classroom. This study aims to explore the difficulties that English teachers face when applying HOTS-based questionss during the teaching and learning process. The research was conducted at SMP Negeri 3 Meulaboh The subjects of this study were four English teachers from SMP Negeri 3 Meulaboh. The object of the research was the difficulties they experienced in implementing HOTS. This research used a descriptive qualitative method, and the data were collected through interviews. The results of the study show that there are three main difficulties faced by the teachers: (1) limited knowledge and understanding of HOTS, (2) students’ low abilities and differences in background, and (3) lack of preparation in designing HOTS-based questionss. These findings suggest that teachers need more training and support to help them apply HOTS effectively in the classroom.
