Pemahaman menyimak merupakan komponen krusial dalam tes TOEFL dan sering menjadi tantangan bagi penutur asing karena kompleksitas, keterbatasan waktu, serta tuntutan kognitif yang tinggi. Penelitian ini bertujuan membandingkan kesulitan menyimak yang dialami mahasiswa laki-laki dan perempuan di Universitas Syiah Kuala. Metode penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain survei potong lintang, melibatkan 90 responden (45 laki-laki dan 45 perempuan) yang dipilih melalui simple random sampling. Instrumen berupa kuesioner tertutup diadaptasi dari Dong (2022), mencakup tiga dimensi utama: kesulitan terkait materi, faktor kognitif pendengar, dan kondisi lingkungan fisik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa perempuan lebih banyak mengalami kesulitan dalam memahami kecepatan bicara, aksen yang beragam, struktur tata bahasa kompleks, serta lebih sensitif terhadap faktor lingkungan seperti kualitas audio dan kenyamanan ruang ujian. Sebaliknya, mahasiswa laki-laki lebih sering mengalami kesulitan pada aspek internal, seperti menjaga konsentrasi, menarik kesimpulan makna, dan mengenali kata yang mirip bunyi. Temuan ini menegaskan adanya perbedaan strategi kognitif berbasis gender, di mana perempuan cenderung menggunakan pemrosesan bottom-up yang detail, sedangkan laki-laki lebih mengandalkan strategi top-down yang global. Penelitian ini menekankan pentingnya pengembangan strategi pembelajaran TOEFL yang adaptif dan inklusif dengan mempertimbangkan kebutuhan kognitif yang berbeda antar gender.
Listening comprehension is a crucial component of the TOEFL test and remains a significant challenge for non-native speakers due to its complexity, time constraints, and high cognitive demands. This study investigates the comparative listening difficulties faced by male and female students at Syiah Kuala University. Employing a quantitative cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from 90 participants (45 males and 45 females) selected through simple random sampling. A closed-ended questionnaire adapted from Dong (2022) was utilized, covering three main dimensions: material-related difficulties, listener-related cognitive factors, and challenges stemming from the physical environment. The results reveal that female students experienced greater difficulties in comprehending rapid speech, diverse accents, and complex grammatical structures, as well as higher sensitivity to environmental conditions such as audio clarity and room comfort. In contrast, male students encountered more challenges in internal aspects, including maintaining focus, inferring meaning, and recognizing similar-sounding words. These findings highlight gender-based differences in cognitive strategies, with females tending to employ detailed bottom-up processing while males rely more on global top-down approaches. The study underscores the importance of developing adaptive and inclusive TOEFL preparation strategies that accommodate diverse cognitive needs across genders.
