Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis korelasi antara pemahaman tata bahasa dan keterampilan berbicara pada mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, FKIP Universitas Syiah Kuala. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan desain korelasional. Sampel terdiri dari 36 mahasiswa dari tiga kelompok berbeda (2021, 2022, dan 2023), yang dipilih secara acak. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes tata bahasa berdasarkan Oxford Online English Grammar Test dan tes berbicara menggunakan platform Speechace. Hasilnya menunjukkan korelasi positif antara pemahaman tata bahasa dan keterampilan berbicara, dengan koefisien korelasi sebesar 0,29, yang termasuk dalam kategori rendah. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa meskipun tata bahasa berkontribusi terhadap kemampuan berbicara, faktor-faktor lain seperti pengucapan, kelancaran, dan kosakata juga memainkan peran penting. Oleh karena itu, pendekatan pembelajaran yang lebih komprehensif yang mengintegrasikan penguasaan tata bahasa dengan praktik berbicara diperlukan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan komunikasi siswa dalam bahasa Inggris.

This study aims to analyze the correlation between grammar comprehension and speaking skills among students of the English Education Study Program, FKIP Universitas Syiah Kuala. This research employs a quantitative method with a correlational design. The sample consists of 36 students from three different cohorts (2021, 2022, and 2023), selected randomly. Data were collected through a grammar test based on the Oxford Online English Grammar Test and a speaking test using the Speechace platform. The results indicate a positive correlation between grammar comprehension and speaking skills, with a correlation coefficient of 0,29, which falls into the low category. This suggests that while grammar contributes to speaking ability, other factors such as pronunciation, fluency, and vocabulary also play crucial roles. Therefore, a more comprehensive learning approach that integrates grammar mastery with speaking practice is necessary to enhance students’ communication skills in English.
