Penelitian kualitatif deskriptif ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh siswa kelas tiga dan sumber-sumber kesalahan yang menyebabkan kesalahan pengucapan, khususnya pada huruf vokal bahasa Inggris. Data dalam penelitian ini dikumpulkan dari 22 siswa kelas tiga SMPN 16 Banda Aceh. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes dan observasi. Tes pelafalan dilakukan selama dua kali pertemuan, sementara tiga pertemuan difokuskan untuk mengamati proses pembelajaran. Tes pelafalan direkam, dibandingkan dengan transkripsi fonetik standar dari Collins Dictionary, dan dianalisis untuk mengidentifikasi kesalahan. Observasi dilakukan untuk mengamati sumber-sumber kesalahan dalam proses pembelajaran melalui konteks pembelajaran dan strategi komunikasi. Hasilnya menunjukkan tiga jenis kesalahan: substitusi; insersi; dan penghilangan. Tipe substitusi merupakan tipe kesalahan yang paling dominan dilakukan oleh siswa. Mengenai sumber kesalahan, ada empat penyebab utama yang diidentifikasi: transfer interlingual, transfer intralingual, konteks pembelajaran, dan strategi komunikasi.

This descriptive qualitative research is aimed to find out the types of errors produced by third-grade students and the sources of error that caused the mispronunciations, specifically in English vowels. The data in this study were collected from the 22 third-grade students of SMPN 16 Banda Aceh. The data were gathered through the test and observation. Pronunciation test was conducted during two meetings, while three meetings focused on observing the learning process. The pronunciation test was recorded, compared with the standard phonetic transcription from Collins Dictionary, and analyzed to identify the errors. The observation was conducted to observe the sources of errors in the learning process through the context of learning and communication strategies. The result shows the three error types: substitution; insertion; and omission. The substitution type was the most dominant error that was produced by the students. Regarding the sources of errors, four main causes were identified: interlingual transfer, intralingual transfer, context of learning, and communication strategies.
