Title : The Use of Role Play Technique In Improving Students’
Speaking Performance (An Experimental Study at The Second
Grade Students of SMAN 12 Banda Aceh)

This study was conducted to find out role play technique can help the students
improve speaking performance. The focus is on the use of role play technique in
improving students’ speaking performance especially in grammar, fluency and
pronunciation. The sample was 24 second grade students of SMAN 12 Banda Aceh.
The design of this study was experimental research by using one group pretest-posttest design. The instrument used to collect the data was oral test. The result of the
test was analyzed by using speaking criteria proposed by Brown (2004). Some
statistical formulas were also used to analyze the data. From the result of the study, it
was found that mean score of pretest and posttest was different. The mean of pretest
was 55 and the mean of posttest was 72.08.the result showed that there was
significant improvement of students’ speaking performance, particularly in grammar,
fluency and pronunciation after role play was applied. Therefore, it is suggested that
role play can be used by English teachers in teaching speaking.
