Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi potensi motivasional dari *Minecraft: Story Mode*, sebuah permainan berbasis narasi, dalam mendorong siswa untuk terlibat dalam kegiatan membaca. Pemahaman terhadap alur cerita sangatlah penting, karena pemain secara aktif membentuk jalannya cerita. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki persepsi siswa tentang bermain *Minecraft: Story Mode* sebagai sarana untuk meningkatkan keterampilan membaca. Metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini, melibatkan empat mahasiswa Universitas Syiah Kuala yang memiliki pengalaman bermain game tersebut dan yang saat ini sedang atau telah menyelesaikan semua tingkat kursus membaca. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara dengan menggunakan teknik *purposive sampling*, di mana peserta dipilih berdasarkan kriteria tertentu. Analisis data menggunakan model analisis tematik yang secara efektif mengidentifikasi, menganalisis, dan melaporkan pola (tema) dalam data. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa *Minecraft: Story Mode* meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa melalui tiga persepsi, yaitu: memperkenalkan kosakata baru dari alur cerita, melalui mekanisme permainan, serta dari tantangan atau misi dalam permainan. Permainan ini membuat proses pembelajaran menjadi lebih menarik dan interaktif serta membantu mengembangkan berbagai keterampilan membaca kritis.
This study explores the motivational potential of Minecraft: Story Mode, a narrative-based game, for encouraging students to engage in reading. Understanding the storyline is crucial, as players actively shape the plot. The research aims to investigate students' perceptions of playing "Minecraft: Story Mode" as a means to enhance reading skills. A qualitative descriptive research method was employed, involving four students from Syiah Kuala University who had experience with the game and were either currently enrolled in or had completed all levels of reading courses. Data were collected through interviews using purposive sampling, where participants were selected based on specific criteria. Data analysis employs the thematic analysis model, which effectively identifies, analyzes, and reports patterns (themes) within the data. Findings indicate that Minecraft: Story Mode enhances students' reading abilities through three perceptions which are Introducing new vocabulary from the storyline, through game mechanics, and from the challenges or missions inside the game. The game makes the learning process more engaging and interactive and aids in developing various critical reading skills.
