Title : Increasing Students’ Performance in Reading Comprehension by Using Directed Reading Activity Strategy (An Experimental Study at SMA 1 Baitussalam)

Keywords: performance, reading comprehension, DRA strategy

This study is an experiment of using DRA in teaching reading. A number of studies and preliminary study showed that the ability of students in comprehending reading material was poor. This is what forces the writer to seek an effective strategy in teaching reading. An alternative way of improvement is to improve the teaching strategy by using Directed Reading Activity (DRA) strategy. There were two classes treated as the sample of the study. One was as experimental group and the other was as control group. The class was taken by using lottery sampling method. The instrument of this study was a set of test, specifically pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was given before the treatment to know student’s previous knowledge and post-test was given to know student’s achievemnent after treatment. During the study, the writer used other strategy for the control group and DRA strategy for the eksperimental group. From the result of study obtained the standard deviation (SD) of the pre-test and the post-test of the control group were 11.45 and 11.49 and the t-score was 3.31. Both of SDs score was slightly different and the t-score also slightly different to the t-table score. Otherwise, the standard deviation (SD) of the pre-test and the post-test of the experimental group were 12.06 and 7.06. The t-score of both tests were 9.02. Both of SD scores were different significantly and also the t-score was higher than the t-table. The t-score of the post-test of the experimental and the control group was 10.46. It was higher than t-table. It indicated there was significant differences after DRA strategy applied. In brief, the use DRA strategy increased students’ performance in reading comprehension.
