Penelitian ini menggambarkan penerapan metode reward dan punishment dalam pengajaran speaking. Alasan utamanya adalah siswa kurang termotivasi dalam kelas speaking, meskipun mereka telah belajar bahasa Inggris selama kurang lebih 4 tahun. Pendekatan penelitian ini adalah kualitatif. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah checklist observasi dan pedoman wawancara. Dalam pemilihan partisipan, penulis menggunakan metode purposive sampling. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) untuk mengetahui jenis reward dan punishment yang digunakan oleh guru bahasa Inggris di MA Pondok Pesantren Darul Aitami, (2) untuk mengetahui bagaimana guru menerapkan strategi reward dan punishment di kelas speaking, dan (3) untuk mengetahui bagaimana respon siswa terhadap penerapan reward dan punishment. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada siswa kelas 1 MA Pesantren Darul Aitami Selatan Selatan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ditemukan bahwa reward dan punishment dilakukan dengan berbagai cara. Ini memotivasi siswa untuk berprestasi di sekolah dan mencapai nilai yang lebih baik. Strategi ini sangat berguna bagi guru dalam mengajar. Bagi peneliti selanjutnya, penelitian yang sama dapat direplikasi untuk memastikan dampak dari reward dan punishment.
This study described the implementation of the reward and punishment method in teaching speaking. The main reason was the fact that students were less motivated in the speaking class, even though they have studied English for approximately 4 years. The approach of this study was qualitative. The instrument used in this study was the observation checklist and the interview guide. In selecting the participants, the writer used purposive sampling method. The aims of this study were (1) to find out the types of rewards and punishments used by English teachers at senior high school of Darul Aitami Islamic boarding school, (2) to find out how the teachers implement reward and punishment strategies in speaking class, and (3) to find out how the students’ response on the implementation of rewards and punishments. This research was conducted on the first grade of the Darul Aitami Islamic Boarding high school, South Selatan. Based on the results of this study, it was found that reward and punishment was carried out in various ways. It motivated students to do well in school and achieve better grades. This strategy was very useful for teachers in teaching. For the future researchers, the same study can be replicated in order to confirm the impact of rewards and punishments.
