Judul : An Analysis of Students’ Speaking Anxiety in Virtual Learning Classroom During COVID-19 (A Descriptive Qualitative Study at the Second Grade Students of English Education Department of Syiah Kuala University)

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan (1) tingkat kecemasan berbicara siswa dan (2) faktor yang menyebabkan kecemasan berbicara siswa selama pembelajaran virtual. Penelitian ini menggambarkan tingkat kecemasan berbicara siswa dan faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan siswa merasa cemas di kelas berbicara virtual. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, dengan tujuan untuk menganalisis data yang diambil dari 30 mahasiswa semester dua Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Syiah Kuala tahun ajaran 2021/2022. Dalam melakukan penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan kuesioner PSCAS (Public Speaking Class Anxiety Scale) oleh Yaikhong dan Usaha (2012). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa (67%) berada pada tingkat sedang atau medium yang dialami oleh 20 dari 30 siswa. Sedangkan faktor yang paling mempengaruhi kecemasan siswa adalah faktor internal, yaitu kurangnya persiapan (73%), kemudian faktor selanjutnya adalah kesalahan tata bahasa, motivasi, teman/teman sekelas, rasa malu pada diri sendiri, kurang percaya diri, takut salah, rasa malu oleh lingkungan sekitar, dan keterbatasan kosakata. Berdasarkan temuan tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa berbicara bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Asing di kelas virtual dapat membuat siswa merasa cemas dan tertekan. Kecemasan dapat berdampak negatif terhadap prestasi berbicara siswa, oleh karena itu penting bagi dosen untuk memperhatikan kecemasan siswa dan mencari metode pembelajaran terbaik untuk mengurangi kecemasan mereka, juga dengan membuat suasana kelas lebih nyaman dan tidak monoton.

This research described the level of students' speaking anxiety and the factors causes students to feel anxious in the virtual speaking classroom. This research used descriptive qualitative method, with the aim of analyzing data taken from 30 students of second semester students of English Education Department at Syiah Kuala University in academic year of 2021/2022. In conducting this study, the researcher used PSCAS (Public Speaking Class Anxiety Scale) questionnaire by Yaikhong and Usaha (2012). The results revealed that most of students (67%) were in medium level which experienced by 20 out of 30 students. Meanwhile the factors that most influenced student anxiety is lack of preparation factors (73%), then the next factor is grammatical error, motivation, friend/classmate, embarrassment, lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, shyness and limited vocabulary. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that speaking English as Foreign Language in the virtual classroom can make students feel anxious and pressured. Anxiety can negatively affect students' speaking achievement, therefore it is important for lecturers to be concerned with students' anxiety and find the best learning methods to reduce their anxiety, also by making the class atmosphere more comfortable and not monotonous.
