Penelitian eksperimental ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui efektivitas dari penggunaan strategi Paragraph Shrinking pada siswa kelas 7 SMPN 1 Lhokseumawe dalam meningkatkan pemahaman membaca khususnya dalam memahami informasi umum, informasi detil, referensi, dan kosa kata. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kuantitatif dimana data numerik digunakan dalam mengumpulkan dan menganalisa data. Jenis penelitiannya adalah kuasi eksperimen. Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas 7 SMPN 1 Lhokseumawe. Peneliti menggunakan sampel acak sederhana dalam memilih sampel, dimana ada dua kelas terpilih sebagai kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai pre-test siswa pada aspek general information meningkat dari 410 menjadi 565. Begitupun dengan nilai detail information meningkat dari 430 menjadi 605. Selain itu, pada aspek reference meningkat dari 590 menjadi 610 dan pada aspek vocabulary meningkat dari 600 menjadi 630. Berdasarkan dari hasil T-test, df value adalah 29 dan deT value 16,370. Berdasarkan dari tabel output SPSS, Sig. (2-tailed) memiliki nilai p-value = 0.00, berarti bahwa p-value

This experimental research was carried out to discover the effectiveness of using Paragraph Shrinking Strategy to the 7th grade students of SMPN 1 Lhokseumawe in improving reading comprehension specifically in understanding general information, detail information, reference, and vocabulary. The method of this research is descriptive quantitative where numerical data were used in collecting and analyzing the data. The type of research used in this research is quasi experimental design research. The population of this research is all the students in the first grade of SMPN 1 Lhokseumawe. The researcher used simple random sampling in selecting the samples where there two classes taken as an experimental class and a controlled class. The results show that students’ pre-test score on general information is only 410 but has increased to 565. Likewise with detail information from 430 becomes 605. Moreover, reference from 590 becomes 610 and vocabulary from 600 to be 630. Based on the results of the T-test, the df value is 29 and deT value is 16.370.
