Untuk memotivasi siswa dalam proses belajar-mengajar bahasa Inggris, Motivational teaching strategy merupakan tawaran untuk seorang guru untuk diterapkan di dalam kelas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi persepsi siswa terhadap motivational teaching strategy yang dikembangkan oleh Dornyei (2001) dan mendeskripsikan the nature of the students and the teacher’s motivational teaching strategy. Studi kualitatif ini berfokus pada case study sebagai metode penelitian. Subjek penelitian nya adalah 22 siswa laki-laki kelas dua SMP Darul Qur’an Aceh Besar, dan seorang guru bahasa Inggris. Data dikumpulkan dari close-ended questionnaire, interview guide dan observation checklist. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan ada 10 motivational teaching strategy yang sangat penting untuk diterapkan guru dalam proses belajar-mengajar bahasa Inggris, beserta alasannya menurut pendapat siswa. Selain itu, ada 22 motivational teaching strategies yang diterapkan guru, yang sebagian besar mendapat reaksi positif dari siswa. Temuan ini dapat menjadi reflective-teaching bagi guru bahasa Inggris untuk mempertahankan, mengembangkan, dan menerapkan strategi yang sesuai, dengan melihat persepsi siswa sebagai bahan pertimbangan. Dengan adanya keterbatasan penelitian, seperti penelitian yang pertama kali dilakukan di Aceh, subjek penelitian yang belum terlalu menyeluruh, dan keterbatasan waktu dalam melakukan penelitian, diharapkan peneliti selanjutnya dapat melakukan penelitian yang sama secara mendalam di Aceh.

This study aims at exploring the students’ perception towards the motivational teaching strategies developed by Dornyei (2001) and describe the nature of the students and the teacher’s motivational teaching strategies. A case study is used as a research methodology. The research subject is the 22 male students of second grade in Darul Qur’an Junior High School, Aceh Besar and an English teacher. The data were obtained through close-ended questionnaire, interview guide, and observation checklist. The findings reveal that there are ten crucial motivational teaching strategies applied by the teacher in teaching and learning process therewith the reasons according to the students’ perception. On top of that, the teacher applies 22 motivational teaching strategies which mostly gain the students’ positive reactions. This finding is expected to be the reflective-teaching for all English teachers to maintain, develop, and apply the relevant strategies by fully taking into account students’ perception. As this research is considered an initiatory in the focus of motivational teaching strategies of English teaching and learning particularly in Aceh, the research subject used is still partial and there is a limited time in conducting the research. Accordingly, it is prompted for the subsequent researchers to profoundly carry out the similar research in Aceh.
