The title of this study is "Improving Students' Ability in Mastering Simple Past Tense by Using Short Reading Passage". It is an experimental study done for three weeks at SMP Negeri 6 Banda Aceh. The aims of this study is to know whether short reading passage used can improve students' ability in mastering simple past tense. The text used in this study is narrative text. The population of this study was the students from the second grade of SMP Negeri 6 Banda Aceh in academic year 2009-20 IO. There were two groups in this study, an experimental group (EG) and control group (CG). The sample of this study is 50 students; 25 students at EG and 25 students at CG. The data were collected through the pretest and post test that were given to the students before and after conducting this study. The data were analyzed by the t-test formula, According to the data analysis showed that the calculated value of t-test of post test (after the experiment) is 7.59. The critical value of t-table at the level significant 0.05 is 2.01 and at the level of
significant 0.0 I is 2.68 with the degree of freedom 48. Since, the result of t-test is greater than t-table, the hypothesis is accepted. It means that the application of short reading passage in this study can improve the students' ability in mastering simple past tense. Furthermore, using short reading passage was better strategy in improving the second grade students at SMP Negeri 6 Banda Aceh in mastering simple past tense.
