ABSTRACT The existence of gold mining activities in Panton Luas Village, Sawang District, South Aceh has impacts on the lives of the local community, not only the socioeconomic improvement continues, but also gold mining activities have impacts on socio- ecological changes among the miners. The purpose of this study was to identify and explain the socio-ecological changes due to gold mining that occurred in Panton Luas Village, Sawang District, South Aceh Regency. The theory used was the socio- ecological change theory. This research method used a qualitative approach with the type of descriptive research. Research informants were village heads, community leaders and gold mining communities. Data collection techniques in this research were interview, observation, documentation and literature study. The descriptive qualitative was used as the data analysis. Based on the results of the study, it showed that the existence of a gold mine in Panton Luas Village, Sawang District has made socio- ecological changes in the community. This socio-ecological change can be seen from the reduced public attention to the environment, the increasing dependence of the community on nature and the formation of norms for social interaction with the natural environment. Therefore, it is recommended to the mining community, that in working as miners, they should pay attention to the negative impacts that can harm the community due to natural damage caused by gold mining activities. Moreover, the Panton Luas Village apparatus should continue to push for restrictions on mining activities, by issuing laws and regulations. To the government should take firm policies to overcome the illegal mining, so that it did not to harm the community at large. Keywords: Change, Social Ecology, Gold Mining.
