This study is entitled Improving Students' Ability in Writing a Narrative Essay by Using Picture Series. The dependent variable of this research is improving students' ability in writing a narrative essay and the independent variable is using picture series. This research was conducted to find out whether the picture series could improve students' ability in writing a narrative essay. Ln order to prove the hypotheses, the writer conducted an experimental research to the third grade students of SMAN 6 Banda Aceh. The samples of this study were chosen by using purposive sampling. There were two classes, XlI Al3 and XII IA4. as samples,which each class consisted of 32 students. The research was held on 27 th January 2010 Until 24th February 2010. The data collection is from pretest and posttest of written test from the experimental group and control group. The technique of data analysis is by using SPSS. The result of this study, mean of the experimental and control group is 76.25 and 67.56 respectively. The standard deviation of the experimental and control group is 7.947 and 10.026. The standard error mean of the experimental and control group is 1.405 and 1.772. t-score (3.841) is higher than t-table (2.000) for level significance 0.05. Therefore. the null hypothesis
