<note>This study is aimed to find out whether describing words orally through crossword game can increase students' ability in speaking of junior high school students. The method used in this study was experimental teaching. The population of this study was all of the second year students of SMP Negeri 16 Banda Aceh. As the sample, the researcher took two classes, 2' and 23; 2' was the control class and 23 was the experimental class. The total number of the sample was 60 students; 30 students of experimental and control class. The instruments that were used for pre test, teaching experiment, and post test consisted of three kinds of vocabulary with each crosswords; vocabulary of animals, occupations, and fruits. There were eight meetings in this study. Here, some formulas that were suggested by Arikunto (2006) that used to analyze the data. The result of the test from the using of crossword game in experimental class showed that the students' ability in mastering speaking increased than in control class. It was proved by the t-score result which is the t-score was 3.310, reffered to the t-table at level significance 0.05% with the degree of freedom (df) 58 the result was higher than the t-table. The hypotheses of this study were (I) the oral description of words through crossword game can encourage students to speak better English and to increase speaking skill (Ha), (2) The oral description of words through crossword game cannot encourage students to speak better English and to increase speaking skill (Ho). From the result of study, the t-test value was higher than critical value of t-table. it means that hypothesis alternative (He) was accepted and hypothesis null (10) was rejected.
