This thesis focused on improving students' mastery of vocabulary by using Crossword Puzzle. The purpose of this study is to know whether the using of crossword puzzle can improve students' vocabulary achievement or not. To obtain the data for this study, the writer conducted an experimental study at SMPN 7 Banda Aceh. The second grade students were taken as the subject of this study. The writer took two classes purposively from 7 classes and took the whole class as the sample of this research (30 from Vill-I and 30 from VIlI-2). The students' achievement or performance was scored by using pretest and posttest. Pretest was conducted before the experiment in order to know the students' score in both groups before the treatment. On the other hand, posttest is to know the students' achievement after the treatment. To find the result of this study, the writer used T-score. The result of the pretest and posttest of experimental group showed that the mean score of pretest is 65,3 and the mean score of posttest is 86, 8 and the value of T-score is 11, 9. The critical value of t-table at the level significant 0, 05 is 2, 00 and at the level of significant 0, 01 is 2, 65 with the degree of freedom 58. The result of t-test is higher than t-table; it indicates that there is a significant difTerence in the experimental group between pretest and posnesi. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis is accepted.
It means that the using of Crossword Puzzle in this study can improve the students'
mastery of vocabulary. Moreover, Crossword puzzle was a better teaching media/aid than a conventional media in improving the second grade students' performance at SMPN 7 Banda Aceh in Vocabulary. Indeed, it is hoped that the teacher and students to consider the using of teaching media that can help them in teaching learning process especially in vocabulary mastery.
