This study is intented to find out the process and the impact of retelling story technique on students' speaking achievement. This study used case study design. It was conducted at SMA Negeri 9 Banda Aceh. The population of this study was all of the second grade students of SMA Negeri 9 Banda Aceh, while the samples were students of Class 2IA- I; the number of the samples was 30 students. To collect the data, observation sheet, document, and record were used by the writer as the instruments. The collected data were analyzed by using frequency distribution formula. The result of observation shows that retelling story increased the students' vocabulary and improved their grammatical structures and pronunciation ability. In addition, it was also motivated the students in learning English by making them more interested and active. The result of analyzing data, the highest score was 95, the lowest score was 65, the range score (R) was 30; the interval (i) was 6; the amount of class interval (K) was 5; and the mean score (x) was
73.87. Finally, the writer concluded that retelling story technique can increase the
students achievement and motivate them in learning English. Furthermore, retelling story gives positive impact on students' speaking achievement. Therefore, the teacher should maintain and develop their knowledge about the retelling story in order to get more effectiveness teaching speaking in the classroom.
