The objective of this research was to investigate the language learning strategies employed by the students of SMPN 6 Banda Aceh in learning speaking. The population of this study is the second year students of SMPN 6 Banda Aceh. There are eight classes for the second years; each class consists of 24 students, so the total numbers of students for the second grade are 192 students. Since the population is too many the writer took only 25% of the entire population which means only 48 students. This study is a survey research. The methodology used is descriptive research with quantitative method. This research used questionnaires as the instrument. The questionnaires consisted of 30 items based on six categories language learning strategies. Here, some formulas that are suggested by Arikunto (2006) were used to analyze the
data .The result of this research shows that, in general, among the six categories of language
Learning strategies the students employed were metacognitive strategies in learning English with
the highest total average of 3.53. The other strategies employed were the memory strategy of I
3.34, affective strategy of 3.32, cognitive strategy of 3.30, and the compensation strategy of
2.77 was the low predicate.
