This study is entitled "Mastery of Phrasal Verbs by the Third Year of English Department Students of Teacher Training and Education Faculty." The aim of this study is to know the mastery of vocabulary and grammatical rules of phrasal verb by the third year English Department students of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Syiah Kuala University. The sample was thirty-three students. The research was undertaken on June 6", 2007. The instruments consisted of twenty-five questions in vocabulary test and fifteen questions in grammar test. The data of the tests were analyzed by using mean and percentage. The average of all the correct answers in vocabulary test is 56.61 % and in grammar test is 60.40 %. In vocabulary test, 9.09 % students got the highest score with 19 correct answers and only a student got the lowest score with 5 correct answers from 25 items. In this test, there is none of the students mastered the phrasal verbs very well. It shows that some students were good enough in mastering those phrasal verbs. lo grammar test, 21.21 % students answered 15 items correctly and 15.15 % students answered all items incorrectly. 39.59 % of all students also did not answer the grammar test questions correctly; placing the pronoun in the correct position in the complete sentence. Based on the results, the distribution of the score of the students is not normal. There are students that are more dominant in the highest and lowest range of the score than the number of the students in the middle range of the score.
