This thesis is entitled "Students' Ability in Using English Preposition". The aim of this study is to find out the first year students' ability of SMAN 4 Banda Aceh in using English preposition. The population of this study is the first
grade students of SMAN 4 Banda Aceh which consist of eight classes. The sample of this study is four classes of the first grade students of the school that consist of 128 students. The method used in this research was descriptive quantitative. The random sampling technique was used in collecting the data, they were given a set of test in understanding the usage of preposition with the number of items are 50. Statistical procedure such as, the range score, the interval width,
the interval class, the frequency distribution, and arithmetic mean (X) were used to analyze the data. The result of the test showed that the range score for this study is 60, and 8 for the interval width. For the interval class, it also got 8. Then from the frequency distribution of score, the writer got 55.25 for arithmetic mean. It is considered the criteria of value in this research is not enough. It shows that the first year students of SMAN 4 Banda Aceh do not have good ability in using English preposition.
