One of the eight parts of speech is preposition. A preposition is used to connect a noun or a pronoun with other parts of the sentence. In fact, the use of the preposition seems difficult to students. By conducting this research, the writer is interested in knowing the ability of second year students of SMA Negeri I Kembang Tanjung in mastering English preposition. The samples of this study were the second
year students namely II1 They are 40 students. To collect the data, the writer gave
them an objective test in form of multiple choices. In processing the data, the writer used the statistical procedure; the range of score, the interval width, the interval class. the frequency distribution, and arithmetic mean ( X ). From the data analysis,
the mean ( X) score of the second year students of SMA Negeri I Kem bang Tanjong is 57.5. It is considered the criteria of value is not enough, the alternative hypothesis (I la) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. So, the writer concluded that the students of the second year students of SMA Negeri I Kembang Tanjong do not have ability in mastering English preposition.
