The objective of this study is to elaborate some given theories and research findings on the use of role play technique in teaching speaking. The method used in this study is library research where the writer obtains the information from many resources such as books, articles, journals, theses, newspapers, magazines, previous studies, and also through websites on the internet. Role play technique is important in improving speaking because they give learners an opportunity to practice communicating in different social roles (Freeman 1986:57). Using role-playing techniques students participate actively in learning activities, as they express their feelings. ideas. and arguments, trying to convince others of their viewpoint, and, thus, they create and develop self-efficacy beliefs ( Blatner : 2005). Campbel ( 1989) says, "Speaking is an activity of the part of the other to understand what is in the mind of the first". From those theories, we can conclude that role play helps student to improve their speaking by using their own ideas and feelings. The results of th.is study are helping students to develop their self confidence and demonstrating them how to interact with their environment. The conclusion of this study is role play technique can help student in improving speaking ability.
