<note>This study is intended to look some given theories and findings on the use of Role Play technique for teaching speaking skill. The method used in this study is library research. Readings obtained are explored descriptively based on statements and/or theories suggested by the experts. The discussion is focused on a particular technique under the Communicative Approach, namely Role Play. Based on the literature findings, it shows that the use of Role Play technique can encourage students to be able to express their thought and feeling freely in the target language, primarily for the shy students since they do not have to take the responsibility for what they are saying in role playing. Besides, it is also found that by implementing role play, the students can solve their difficulties in expressing empathy in real-life situation since it gives them opportunity to experience various kinds of situations. This study is expected to be useful for EFL teachers in teaching speaking, and the students can also be motiveted in learning and developing their speaking skill effectively.
